This poem has to be one of the most wonderful things I’ve read this year. Titilope sees through me. I hope it melts your heart as much as it did mine.

“It’s not you, It’s me”
“I just need some time alone to figure things out.”
“I feel like I’m holding you back.”
“you’re too good for me”
“I’m not the man you need me to be right now.”
***
“My mother said…”
“My pastor said…”
“My spirit said…”
***
“I think I love you too much”
“I just don’t love you anymore”
“I love you…like a friend”
“I’m still in love with her”
***
“She’s pregnant”
“you’re pregnant?”
“I’m just not ready for this kind of commitment”
“I’m getting married”
***
“I’m moving away”
“This long distance thing…It’s just too difficult”
“If it’s meant to be, we will find our way back to each other”
“maybe it’s not meant to be”
***
“you ruined us”
“I hate you”
“I hate the person I become when I’m with you”
“I’m tired”
“It’s over”
***
Years from now
you will remember these words
in this moment
how your heart lurched from your chest
the tears that tumbled down your face
you might cringe at how
you tried to bargain with him
with her
with yourself
with God
you will remember this girl
raw and open
her whole word spinning
off its axis
I promise
you will laugh for her
you will cry for her
you will dance for her
you will bless the woman you became
because of her
you will give thanks
for the last words
thrown like bricks
how they became the dark dead end
that actually saved your life.
