It’s that time of the year again – CHRISTMAS!!!

Christmas has changed over here. No one bothers about christmas clothes anymore, no one bothers about christmas hair. No one travels to the village anymore – You know, the typical Nigerian Igbo Family Christmas. Maybe it is because we are all grown up and have “better” things to worry about.

I for one, have one “better thing” to worry about. I have been trying to read and study so hard. The only I think about now is my BAR FINALS – which is in AUGUST!

But all these do not change the MEANING of CHRISTMAS. Christmas is all about Jesus Christ and a reminder that he came into this world for YOU. For me.

While studying this morning – I usually read with music – cool, calm, soothing music, especially in the wee hours of the morning – I listened to a new single from the HILLSONG – PEACE PROJECT CHRISTMAS ALBUM.

My favourite from the album is SEASONS. Powerful lyrics that spoke to me. And once again, I am reminded that God has not forgotten us. We all have our seasons and when it comes???

I will put down the lyrics and I hope you get INSPIRED and meditate on the words – for days when the things you prayed for are taking forever to become realities.

Words and Music by Chris Davenport, Benjamin Hastings & Ben Tan

Like the frost on a rose

Winter comes for us all

Oh how nature acquaints us

With the nature of patience

Like a seed in the snow

I’ve been buried to grow

For Your promise is loyal

From seed to sequoia

I know

Though the winter is long even richer

The harvest it brings

Though my waiting prolongs even greater

Your promise for me like a seed

I believe that my season will come

Lord I think of Your love

Like the low winter sun

As I gaze I am blinded

In the light of Your brightness

Like a fire to the snow

I’m renewed in Your warmth

Melt the ice of this wild soul

Till the barren is beautiful

I can see the promise

I can see the future

You’re the God of seasons

I’m just in the winter

If all I know of harvest

Is that it’s worth my patience

Then if You’re not done working

God I’m not done waiting

You can see my promise

Even in the winter

Cause You’re the God of greatness

Even in a manger

For all I know of seasons

Is that You take Your time

You could have saved us in a second

Instead You sent a child

And when I finally see my tree

Still I believe there’s a season to come

Like a seed You were sown

For the sake of us all

From Bethlehem’s soil

Grew Calvary’s sequoia

Sequoia. How Big!!!!

Ben Hastings wrote this on the Website:

Have you ever seen a Giant Sequoia?
I was a 12 year old boy in this awkward phase of discovering fashion, so naturally I was wearing this delightful salmon shirt that was as about as far from fashion as we were from Ireland.
Ireland is where I’m from by the way, but on this particular year the Hastings family had decided to vacation along the west Coast of California, and after a long winded winding drive, we found ourselves pulling into the glorious Eden of Yosemite National Park.
Have you ever been? You should. It’s your favourite Microsoft screensaver, but in real life.

We parked, threw our bags in this quaint, quirky inn and rushed out the door to explore a paradise of colour. The deepest greens you have ever seen, water falling in the bluest of blues and dirt trails of adventure and sepia tones that we ran until we ran out of breath. As my brother and I stopped to catch some air, giving our parents a chance to catch us, I remember slowly lifting my head and for the first time stretching my eyes across the grandeur of a Giant Sequoia. It was the biggest thing I had ever seen. Effortlessly scraping the sky, but as wide as the highway that had brought us here, and with my eyes in even wider wonder I stood; my neck stretched back as far as it would go, engulfed in shadow and ancient magnificence.

I wonder if you’ve ever had a similar moment. Perhaps gazing up at a monument of nature or the biggest man-made landmark in your hometown.
For me, when I look at something of such enormity, I can’t help but feel like it’s been there forever.
In Sydney we have The Harbour Bridge. A masterpiece of design and engineering which I have the joy of sitting upon, in traffic everyday (I guess if you’re gonna sit in traffic there are worse views). But I can’t get my mind around the idea that there was a time when it didn’t exist. It’s hard to imagine the Sydney Harbour without it and yet my wife’s Great Grandma Phyllis (105 and as cheeky as ever!) was already a teenager when it was first opened.

I think in the same way, I’ve sometimes viewed God’s promises like that. Maybe it’s just me, but have you ever looked at the fulfilment of His faithfulness in someone else’s life and wondered…

“Where’s my Harbour Bridge?”

“Where’s that wife I heard you whisper?”

“Where’s the materialisation of that thing I know you put in my heart?”

If there is anything I know to be true of God it’s that He’s true to His word. But He’s also very okay with the process. Was the Harbour Bridge airlifted into place? Well no… of course not… Even the three thousand year old Sequoia, was once a seed.

I think Jesus is the perfect example of this. In the Song ‘Seasons’ from ‘The Peace Project‘ there is a line that sings…
“You could have saved us in a second, instead you sent a Child”.
We serve a God of the “Long Game”. Does He have the capacity to airlift the Harbour Bridge of our promise into place? Of course He does! And sometimes, He does. But if we can attribute trends to God (which we probably can’t) I’ve noticed that God often chooses something else: “The Jesus Model”.

From Bethlehem’s soil

Grew Calvary’s Sequoia

He takes His Word and He plants it like a seed in our lives. Watching and watering until it grows and ever so slowly but inevitably blooms into glorious fulfilment. And I think if we look for it, this divine methodology is written into everything from the narrative of the Bible to the beauty of creation.

Oh how nature acquaints us

With the nature of Patience.
His nature.

Quoting Brooke Ligertwood of Hillsong:

“This album, ‘The Peace Project’ is not simply Christmas music. It’s the sound a movement bringing peace to the earth through the Church, in Jesus’ Name.”

Though the waiting seems long…prolongs even greater…

Your season(s) will come…

Seed = Sequoia

The wait will be worth it!

Have an amazing Christmas Celebration!!!

Love and Light…

I’ve had this post in my draft since forever. Lagos won’t let me do a complete post. I had to squeeze out time to write this. Which involved leaving the office by 7pm.

Lagos. The city that makes you forget you have to observe your quiet time. You get up by 4:00am and get home by 9:00pm.

But Hillsong makes things easier for me. I do not know what my spiritual life would have been like if I did not know the lyrics of most Jesus Culture, Hillsong and Bethel Music songs by heart. Continue reading “MUSIC THAT SANCTIFIES – HILLSONG: LET THERE BE LIGHT”

“Every man dies – Not every man really lives.” ~ William Ross

So I asked my roommate last night, “Nelo what’s in your bucket list?” you know what she said? “Soap and Sponge”…. I couldn’t even stop laughing.

I have been doing a lot of thinking lately. I just let my mind wander and drift. I let my self dream and let my thoughts wander as far as possible.

Finally it landed on a mine – BUCKET LIST!!!
If you haven’t heard about the term “bucket list”, it is a list of all the goals you want to achieve, dreams you want to fulfill and life experiences you desire to experience before you die.

The Brevity Of Life.

Do you ever wonder if you are just living or merely existing?
When was the last time you did something challenging? Ever feel your days are passing you by without any tangible output to speak of? What did you accomplish in the past 3 months? What are your upcoming goals for the next 3 months? Look at the things you did and the things you’re planning to do next – Do they mean anything to you if you are to die today? Having a bucket list reminds you of what’s really important so you can act on them.
Bucket list is a platform to set anything and everything you’ve ever wanted to do, whether it’s big, small or random. Mundane or extraordinary.
To cut the long story here’s my BUCKET LIST!!!! (Just few of them on the blog for today. Others should be in the journal somewhere in the room…winks***). I feel sharing them on my blog will make me more committed and dedicated and accountable.

This is not only a Bucket List but a PRAYER! In my country Nigeria, there’s this thing called “ASUU”. They kinda regulate the academic calendar through strike actions and you find out that people stay in school much longer than they should.
I celebrated two Birthdays in my Second year no thanks to ASUU and really I’m praying such doesn’t happen again.
So top of the bucket list is to graduate with my LLB degree come 2016.

2) LEARN TO PLAY THE GUITAR. My roommate has this guitar that she has “neglected”. it’s literally screaming “SOMEONE SHOULD COME AND PLAY WITH ME”. I challenged her and told her I was going to learn to play the guitar before her. Good thing she’s going for her IT without it. I have gotten a tutor and my lesson will begin as soon as I’m done with my 1st semester exams.
You all better get read for my covers!

3) TAKE A “SELFIE” WITH THE INSTITUTION THAT IS CHIMAMANDA NGOZI ADICHIE <<< Click on the link as it summarises my love for Chimamanda in few lines.
How am I going to get that selfie? Cos everyone seems to be taking selfies with CHIMAMANDA and I’m supposed to be the one holding the phone high and smiling like an idiot…Not them.
This is the plan though, I’m going to apply for next year’s Farafina Trust Creative Writing Workshop. Meaning I have to work my hands out by writing a nice story that would get me picked. That’s the plan.

Selfie with the BAE soon….

This was a conversation between my roommate and I. This goes a long way to show you how much WE LOVE CHIMAMANDA NGOZI ADICHIE!!! We crave to meet her just like the way we crave chicken and chips when hungry... And Ohhh "Onye Aguru" means "A HUNGRY PERSON"!! HAHA

Just like Hunter S. Thompson said and I Quote “As things stand now, I’m going to be a writer. I’m not sure that I’m going to be a good one or even a self-supporting one, but until the dark thumb of fate presses me to the dust and says” YOU ARE NOTHING”, I’ll be a writer.”

This means a lot to me. I want to be a writer. I’ll be a writer.

I’ll be taking classes soon on photography and my NIKON baby is on the way. I’ve always loved photography. But now I think I’ll like to make a little something out of it.

P/S : Working on a project and I can’t wait to tell you all about it. But let’s leave the gist for the cooler.

I’m a big fan of HILLSONG and really one of the things I want to do before God calls me home is to go for a concert in AUSTRALIA… I must tap into such heavenly form of worship.

I don’t want to bore you all. As time goes by and as I accomplish and become all I want to, I’ll tick them and post on the blog.

Think about it, if your life ended tomorrow, what would you regret not doing? Because you will die, you must live now. All we have is NOW.
Don’t be wrapped up in non-essential stuff that you forget to really enjoy yourself.

Right now I’m doing things I never thought I would do and could do. And everyone has noticed this change. The bucket list is getting longer and I’M AMAZED! Do something crazy, something out of character…My friends call me ADRIEL / CHIMDINMA 2.0 and won’t stop asking what happened to the older version of me. Everyone is practically tapping from my positivity without me even trying.
Anything could be in the list. You can make it a point to tell someone you love how much they mean to you, show an act of kindness without expecting something in return, surprise someone, be a mentor and an inspiration to someone, start that business, pursue your passion, volunteer to work with and for the less privileged or for a cause that you are passionate about, DO PUBLIC SPEAKING….Go for that picnic, learn that new language………
God, there’s so much to do!

Plan to amaze yourself!
Take that step.
Be a better version of Yourself.
Create your BUCKET LIST.
Live and stop existing.

I have learnt to open my self to the world cos when you do just that the world will open its self to you.

Love xoxo
