The Afro Reader website is up and running and I am excited about the many ideas in my head.
I started a series : CONVERSATIONS!
Conversations is a weekly interview series with some of my favorite poets, novelists and book enthusiasts.
Kamnelechukwu is as beautiful as her name. Her voice is a blend of milk mixed with purehoney. I first heard her talk at the Author’s Talk programme organized by the Kate Tales Foundation. I have always been a fan of her work but it was really great putting a face to the art. And so when the website was ready, she was top on my interview list. In this interview, she talks about her book BRAVE, photography, her phobia for flying roaches and her friendship with Romeo Oriogun – Winner of the 2017 Brunel Prize! All in 20 Simple Questions! When I read through the email, I felt as though I had come out of a liberating theraphy session.
Kamnelechukwu is a Documentary photographer and storyteller from Ebonyi, Nigeria. She holds a degree in Computer Science. She acted as a contributor for the NORTH IS NOT NOT team whilst travelling and changing narratives about Northern Nigeria in 2016. Her Ongoing Project seeks to document the male body and its issues which it rather chooses to internalize by using silence as punishment and also defiance as well as how it deals with the decision to define ourselves, name ourselves and speak for ourselves than have others do it for us.
Her work has been featured on KONBINI, ELSIEISY and SISTER NAMIBIA.
This interview has a lot of soul! Enjoy!

22 is basically the only age you can use as leverage. Meaning that because it’s the exact age between life-as-you-know-it and what will later be known as ‘real life’ (that’s scientifically proven, of course), people expect you to make some mistakes. Mistakes like overcooking a pot-roast or dating someone who may not be right for you. And that’s okay, because heck, you’re just 22. Shanelle Kaul Continue reading “TWENTY-TWO”→
When you sell a man a book, you don’t sell just twelve ounces of paper and ink and glue. You sell him a whole new life. Love and friendship and humour and ships at sea by night – There’s all heaven and earth in a book, a real book. – Christopher Morley. Continue reading “PEOPLE OF IBADAN: D-GADGE BOOKSHOP”→
Anyone who sees beauty and does not look at it will soon be poor. – Yoruba Proverb.
Last week, few of my course mates and I were walking to a class at the Faculty of Arts when we saw something that left us gasping for breath. I saw it first actually. The faculty of Arts had been transformed. The ugly flowers had been replaced with beautiful sculptures and beautiful yellow seats. Too much beauty in just one place. We had to pause and take random pictures. I cajoled them. Mini Photo-shoot.
“Every man dies – Not every man really lives.” ~ William Ross
So I asked my roommate last night, “Nelo what’s in your bucket list?” you know what she said? “Soap and Sponge”…. I couldn’t even stop laughing.
I have been doing a lot of thinking lately. I just let my mind wander and drift. I let my self dream and let my thoughts wander as far as possible.
Finally it landed on a mine – BUCKET LIST!!!
If you haven’t heard about the term “bucket list”, it is a list of all the goals you want to achieve, dreams you want to fulfill and life experiences you desire to experience before you die.
The Brevity Of Life.
Do you ever wonder if you are just living or merely existing?
When was the last time you did something challenging? Ever feel your days are passing you by without any tangible output to speak of? What did you accomplish in the past 3 months? What are your upcoming goals for the next 3 months? Look at the things you did and the things you’re planning to do next – Do they mean anything to you if you are to die today? Having a bucket list reminds you of what’s really important so you can act on them.
Bucket list is a platform to set anything and everything you’ve ever wanted to do, whether it’s big, small or random. Mundane or extraordinary.
To cut the long story here’s my BUCKET LIST!!!! (Just few of them on the blog for today. Others should be in the journal somewhere in the room…winks***). I feel sharing them on my blog will make me more committed and dedicated and accountable.
1) GRADUATE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN BY 2016!!! This is not only a Bucket List but a PRAYER! In my country Nigeria, there’s this thing called “ASUU”. They kinda regulate the academic calendar through strike actions and you find out that people stay in school much longer than they should. I celebrated two Birthdays in my Second year no thanks to ASUU and really I’m praying such doesn’t happen again. So top of the bucket list is to graduate with my LLB degree come 2016.
2)LEARN TO PLAY THE GUITAR. My roommate has this guitar that she has “neglected”. it’s literally screaming “SOMEONE SHOULD COME AND PLAY WITH ME”. I challenged her and told her I was going to learn to play the guitar before her. Good thing she’s going for her IT without it. I have gotten a tutor and my lesson will begin as soon as I’m done with my 1st semester exams. You all better get read for my covers!
3) TAKE A “SELFIE” WITH THE INSTITUTION THAT IS CHIMAMANDA NGOZI ADICHIE <<< Click on the link as it summarises my love for Chimamanda in few lines. How am I going to get that selfie? Cos everyone seems to be taking selfies with CHIMAMANDA and I’m supposed to be the one holding the phone high and smiling like an idiot…Not them. This is the plan though, I’m going to apply for next year’s Farafina Trust Creative Writing Workshop. Meaning I have to work my hands out by writing a nice story that would get me picked. That’s the plan.
Selfie with the BAE soon….
4) PUBLISH TWO BOOKS AT LEAST BEFORE I’M 30!!!
Just like Hunter S. Thompson said and I Quote “As things stand now, I’m going to be a writer. I’m not sure that I’m going to be a good one or even a self-supporting one, but until the dark thumb of fate presses me to the dust and says” YOU ARE NOTHING”, I’ll be a writer.”
This means a lot to me. I want to be a writer. I’ll be a writer.
I’ll be taking classes soon on photography and my NIKON baby is on the way. I’ve always loved photography. But now I think I’ll like to make a little something out of it.
P/S : Working on a project and I can’t wait to tell you all about it. But let’s leave the gist for the cooler.
6) TRAVEL THE WORLD. THAT IS TO SAY, I’LL GO FOR A HILLSONG CONCERT BEFORE I DIE! I’m a big fan of HILLSONG and really one of the things I want to do before God calls me home is to go for a concert in AUSTRALIA… I must tap into such heavenly form of worship.
I don’t want to bore you all. As time goes by and as I accomplish and become all I want to, I’ll tick them and post on the blog.
Think about it, if your life ended tomorrow, what would you regret not doing? Because you will die, you must live now. All we have is NOW.
Don’t be wrapped up in non-essential stuff that you forget to really enjoy yourself.
Right now I’m doing things I never thought I would do and could do. And everyone has noticed this change. The bucket list is getting longer and I’M AMAZED! Do something crazy, something out of character…My friends call me ADRIEL / CHIMDINMA 2.0 and won’t stop asking what happened to the older version of me. Everyone is practically tapping from my positivity without me even trying.
Anything could be in the list. You can make it a point to tell someone you love how much they mean to you, show an act of kindness without expecting something in return, surprise someone, be a mentor and an inspiration to someone, start that business, pursue your passion, volunteer to work with and for the less privileged or for a cause that you are passionate about, DO PUBLIC SPEAKING….Go for that picnic, learn that new language………
God, there’s so much to do!
Plan to amaze yourself!
Take that step.
Be a better version of Yourself.
Create your BUCKET LIST.
Live and stop existing.
BREAK THE DAMN RULES!!!
I have learnt to open my self to the world cos when you do just that the world will open its self to you.
